Backflow Preventers

Valves that prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the mains at the point where a fire system connects to the drinking-water network

EQUIPMENT

What Is a Backflow Preventer, and Where Is It Used?

In most projects, fixed fire suppression systems are fed from the city mains or a drinking-water line. At this connection point, stagnant water sitting in the system can flow back into the mains the moment pressure drops or a pump starts — water in fire piping is considered chemically different from mains water. A backflow preventer is a one-way, testable protection device that physically blocks flow in that direction.

The three models we supply in this group provide the same protection at different scales: the BABM for small-diameter (DN40–DN50) threaded lines, the BA4760 for larger-diameter (DN65–DN250) flanged mains, and the DAS city-main connection set, a connection station that packages the backflow preventer together with the alarm valve and supply configuration in a single unit.

These valves are used at the city-main or drinking-water inlet of a water-based suppression system.

Selection Criteria

  • Connection type: threaded (BABM) from DN40–DN50; flanged (BA4760) from DN65 upward. The line's nominal diameter and pipe material decide the connection type.
  • Protection class: our source catalogue lists these models under EN 1717 protection class 4; this is not a statement of a separate UL/FM/VdS approval body. If your project specification requires a separate approval body, confirm with us before selecting.
  • City-main connection set (DAS): preferred on projects where the pump station connects to the city main through a single package, matched to a wet or dry alarm type and a supply direction (right/left).
  • Service access: backflow preventers require periodic testing; leave enough clearance around the valve at the installation point for service.
