What Is a Butterfly Valve, and Where Is It Used?

A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that stops flow with a disc that rotates around a shaft inside the body. In fixed fire suppression systems, its most common role is as the line isolation (control) valve: on sprinkler risers, zone lines, and pump suction–discharge lines, used to isolate a section during maintenance.

The critical difference in a fire system is that the valve must be supervised. A single control valve left closed by mistake can leave the whole system working on paper but useless in the field; this is why NFPA 13 and TS EN 12845 require system control valves to be either locked in the open position or monitored with a supervisory switch. A butterfly valve fitted with a supervisory switch sends a signal to the fire alarm panel the moment the disc leaves the open position.

The valves we supply in this group are used in water-based suppression systems and foam-based suppression systems.

Selection Criteria

Connection type: threaded connections are used at small diameters (DN25–DN50); grooved connections are standard on riser and zone lines because of installation speed; wafer and lug types are used on flanged lines. The lug type is preferred for end-of-line and equipment isolation because it lets the valve stay in place even when one side of the line is disconnected.
Supervisory switch: any valve used as a system control valve should be specified with a supervisory switch. Types without one are for auxiliary lines that do not require supervision.
Approval scope: the specification your project falls under decides this. UL and FM approvals are sought on NFPA-based projects; VdS approval is sought on CEA/TS EN 12845-based European projects. Not every size of a given model carries the same approvals — check the footnotes in the tables.
Pressure class and size: threaded types are rated up to 12 bar (175 psi); grooved and flanged types up to 21 bar (300 psi) UL/FM or 16 bar (232 psi) VdS. The size range runs from DN25 to DN300.
