A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that stops flow with a disc that rotates around a
shaft inside the body. In fixed fire suppression systems, its most common role is as the
line isolation (control) valve: on sprinkler risers, zone lines, and pump suction–discharge
lines, used to isolate a section during maintenance.
The critical difference in a fire system is that the valve must be supervised. A single
control valve left closed by mistake can leave the whole system working on paper but useless in
the field; this is why NFPA 13 and TS EN 12845 require system control valves to be either
locked in the open position or monitored with a supervisory switch. A butterfly valve fitted
with a supervisory switch sends a signal to the fire alarm panel the moment the disc leaves the
open position.
