What Is This Group Used For?

This group brings together the equipment where a fixed fire suppression system meets the fire brigade: above-ground hydrants, fire department connections (including Siamese connections), pressure-reducing angle and gate valves, and hose couplings and caps.

The dry-barrel hydrant (HYF) is the above-ground outlet point of the city main or a standpipe line; the barrel is kept dry against freeze risk, and water reaches the hydrant body only once the valve is opened. Fire department connections (A53, A53G, A55) and threaded Siamese connections are the connection points that let the fire brigade’s apparatus pump water into the system or draw water from it from outside the building. Pressure-reducing angle and gate valves (A201/A202, A203/A204) provide an adjustable limit on outlet pressure at the fire hose outlet on standpipe lines in tall buildings. Hose couplings and caps (K81D) are adapter and cap components that let different connection standards (NST, BSP, Storz, BS336) interface with one another.

This equipment is used at the fire-brigade connection and supply points of a water-based suppression system.

Selection Criteria

Approval scope: within this group, approval varies model to model — the HYF, A53 and A55 hold both UL and FM approval; the A201/A202, A203/A204 and A53G hold UL approval only; the K81D hose-coupling group has no separate approval line in the source. If your project's specification requires UL, FM or both, select the model against the approval column in the table.
Coupling standard: hose couplings are manufactured to different national/institutional standards — NST (American national standard), BSP, Storz and BS336 among them. Coupling selection should follow the hose-connection type used on the ground by the fire authority your project answers to.
Need for a pressure-reducing valve: in tall buildings, static pressure on a standpipe line can rise above the safe-use limit at the fire hose outlet; adjustable pressure-reducing valves such as the A201/A202 (angle type) or A203/A204 (straight-through gate type) are used in that case.
Body material: the hydrant body is cast iron; the fire department connection and pressure-reducing valves are cast brass/bronze — corrosion-resistant materials suited to outdoor and below-ground use.
