What Is a Gate Valve, and Where Is It Used?

A gate valve stops flow with a disc (gate) that moves perpendicular to the flow axis inside the body. Its most common use in fire systems is the same role as a butterfly valve: as the system control (line isolation) valve — used to isolate a section on pump suction–discharge lines and supply risers.

There are two body types. On non-rising stem types, the gate moves inside the body and the stem does not protrude, so the valve’s open/closed position cannot be observed directly — position is monitored electrically with a supervisory switch or mechanically with a post indicator. On rising stem (OS&Y — Outside Screw & Yoke) types, the stem rises out of the body as the valve opens; position is read by eye from the visible stem.

Post-indicator types (PIF, PIG) work together with the non-rising-stem valves used on buried or below-grade lines: the “OPEN” / “SHUT” window on the vertical post makes the stem position visible above ground. NFPA 13 and TS EN 12845 require system control valves to be either locked in the open position or supervised — this group covers the valve and indicator types that meet that requirement.

On buried NRF/NRG-series valves, the position indicator itself must also be brought above ground: a vertical indicator post (IPV) or wall-mounted indicator post (IPW) makes the valve stem’s position visible at ground or wall level with an “OPEN” / “SHUT” indicator. For the same buried installations, we also supply a multi-part valve box (a system of cover, main body, upper section and extension pieces) that protects the PIF/PIG valve’s operating nut from soil contact and backfill. On small branch lines (1/2″–2″ / DN15–DN50), outside the size range of the main OSF/OSG series, the bronze-bodied T104 rising-stem valve is used.

The valves we supply in this group are used in water-based suppression systems, particularly for pump-station and supply-line isolation.

Selection Criteria

Body type: non-rising-stem (NRF/NRG) types suit tight installation spaces and buried lines; rising-stem (OSF/OSG, OS&Y) types are preferred where position needs to be read directly, on above-ground lines.
Connection type: flanged types (NRF, all "F"-series except NRG11) suit flanged pipework; grooved types are common on riser and zone lines because of installation speed.
Supervision: a non-rising-stem valve used as a system control valve must be supervised for position, either with a supervisory-switch bracket or with a post indicator (PIF/PIG series).
Approval scope: the specification your project falls under decides this. UL and FM approvals are sought on NFPA-based projects; VdS approval is sought on CEA/TS EN 12845-based European projects. Not every size of a given model carries the same approvals — check the footnotes in the tables.
Flange class: PN10 and PN16 flanges have different bolt-hole spacing and are not interchangeable. At large sizes (8″ / DN200 and above) the manufacturer publishes separate part numbers for each class; we confirm the correct class at the quotation stage.
Small-diameter lines: on threaded branch lines from 1/2″–2″ / DN15–DN50, below the size range of the main OSF/OSG series, the T104 (bronze-bodied, rising stem) is preferred.
