What Are Trim Valves, and Where Are They Used?

“Trim valve” is the collective term for the small-diameter auxiliary valves fitted around a sprinkler riser or alarm valve set: they perform functions like testing, drainage, gauge isolation and pressure relief. Unlike the main line isolation valve, they don’t control the system’s flow — they make inspection, maintenance and calibration possible.

Three main uses stand out in this group. Test and drain valves (TAD, 1500, G2, test valve) are selected by the K-factor used in the sprinkler system’s periodic flow tests, and are opened regularly to confirm the alarm valve is operating correctly. Ball valves (R850, S95) give quick open/close operation on pump suction–discharge lines, ahead of pressure gauges, and on auxiliary lines. Bronze globe valves (KT65, KT67, KT211, T301, angle type) are preferred at points on drain and discharge lines that need precise flow adjustment.

The valves we supply in this group are used in the control valve trim and test lines of water-based suppression systems.

Selection Criteria

Function: a ball valve for line isolation; a test/drain valve with a stated K-factor for periodic flow testing and drainage; a gauge valve for isolation ahead of a pressure gauge or indicator.
Approval scope: some models in this group (the S95, the pressure-relief and 3/2-way ball valves, the gauge valve, the 3011A, the G2, the test valve, and the normally-closed spring-type drain valve) are not listed as approved in the source catalogue — where the system specification requires UL/FM or VdS approval, only the models marked as approved (R850, KT65/KT67, KT211, T301, angle-type globe valve, TAD, 1500) can be used.
K-factor: test and drain valves are ordered with the K-factor (metric/nominal) matching the line's design flow — the wrong K-factor invalidates the test result.
Connection and size: most valves in this group are threaded (BSP/NPT) and fall in the DN8–DN100 range; check the model table's part number for the exact size and connection type.
