What Is a Check Valve, and Where Is It Used?

A check valve is a valve on a line that lets fluid pass in one direction only, closing automatically against reverse flow. Its most common uses in fixed fire suppression systems are pump discharge and supply lines: when the pump stops or supply pressure drops, it prevents water in the system from flowing back, cutting off backflow at the points where the mains and the fire line connect.

The models in this group fall into two basic operating principles: spring-loaded types (in-line mounted, able to operate in any orientation) and swing types (with a clapper, closed by weight or a spring, with mounting restrictions that vary from model to model). Wafer (double-door) types are clamped between two flanges and offer a more compact solution at large diameters.

The valves we supply in this group are used in water-based suppression systems, foam-based suppression systems and fire hydrant lines.

Selection Criteria

Connection type: threaded connections are common at small diameters (DN8–DN50); grooved connections are preferred on riser and zone lines because of installation speed; flanged and wafer (double-door) types are used on large-diameter mains and at pump stations.
Mounting orientation: spring-loaded in-line models can operate on horizontal or vertical lines; some swing (clapper) types are suited to horizontal mounting only — confirm the model's mounting restriction before selecting.
Approval scope: the specification your project falls under decides this. UL and FM approvals are sought on NFPA-based projects; VdS approval is sought on CEA/TS EN 12845-based European projects. Some models in this group (small bronze types, the 635E and the DDW) carry no approval information in the source catalogue; these models suit general-purpose/OEM lines.
Pressure class and size: threaded bronze types are rated from 14–28 bar (200–400 psi); grooved and flanged cast-iron types are typically rated up to 16–21 bar (232–300 psi). The size range runs from DN8 to DN400.
