What Is a Strainer, and Where Is It Used?

A strainer (line filter/screen) protects downstream equipment by trapping rust, weld slag and other solid particles carried in the water inside a screened body. In fixed fire suppression systems its most critical role is protecting control valves, check valves and pressure-reducing valves from foreign matter that could damage sealing surfaces or wear a gasket or seat; most valve and regulator manufacturers require a line strainer immediately upstream of their product for that reason.

Body style follows the mounting location: Y-type bodies (YSF, YSG) are fitted on straight runs and operate with low pressure loss; basket-type bodies (595, GH2, SH-G) offer a larger filtering surface and are typically preferred on pump suction lines and large-diameter supply mains.

The equipment we supply in this group complements water-based suppression system, foam-based suppression system and dry riser equipment lines.

Selection Criteria

Connection type: threaded basket-type strainers at small diameters (DN15–DN20); grooved (YSG) or flanged (YSF) Y-type strainers from DN50–DN300. The connection type should match the connection standard of the line the strainer is fitted to.
Mesh size: chosen to match the sensitivity of the equipment being protected — the GH2 series offers 5.6 mm (coarse), 2.5 mm and 1.0 mm (fine) mesh options; a finer mesh requires more frequent cleaning.
Approval scope: the specification your project falls under decides this. The YSF and YSG are UL approved; the GH2 series holds VdS approval and SVGW approval for drinking water; the 595 series is UL and FM approved.
Pressure class and size: threaded basket-type strainers are rated up to 16.5 bar; flanged/grooved Y-type strainers up to 21 bar (300 psi UL). The size range runs from DN15 to DN300.
Service access: basket-type bodies carry a bolted top cover so the screen basket can be removed and cleaned; on lines with a planned cleaning schedule, this access matters for selection.
