What Is a Dry Riser Line, and Where Is It Used?

A dry riser line is a fixed vertical pipe system that is not normally kept filled with water; the fire brigade pumps water into it from their own pumping appliance once they reach the building. Fed from the fire department inlet (FK-2W, FK-4W) at the building entrance, the line rises to a landing valve (FK-LV) on each floor; firefighters connect their hose there and carry suppression water directly to the fire floor. In tall, large-volume buildings, this gives fast access to suppression water without needing to run hose the full height of the stairwell.

The same equipment family is also used on continuously pressurised wet riser lines — the FK-PRV high-pressure-setting landing valve on this page is made specifically for that purpose: it brings excessive supply pressure on the floors near the pump room down to a level the crew using the hose can work with safely.

Selection Criteria

Number of fire department inlets: the line's design flow and the number of fire appliances expected decide the choice between a twin-inlet (FK-2W) or four-inlet (FK-4W) connection; both connect to the fire brigade's hose with a standard BS336 instantaneous coupling.
Landing valve style: the FK-LV is offered within the same body family in oblique, right-angle, horizontal and face-mounted styles — selection follows the pipe routing on the landing and the layout inside the cabinet.
Connection type: PN16 flanged or BSPT/BSP threaded inlet options are available at DN50 and DN65; the outlet is a standard BS336 instantaneous coupling on every model.
Pressure setting for wet lines: where outlet pressure on lower floors near the pump room exceeds the safe limit, the FK-PRV high-pressure-setting landing valve (20 or 30 bar inlet class) is used.
Line strainer: a threaded Y-type strainer fitted close to the line's inlet connection keeps debris that may come from the fire brigade's pump from reaching the landing valve and hose branch.
